Alexa Efraimson named USATF Athlete of the Week2/5/2014
INDIANAPOLIS -- High school junior Alexa Efraimson earns USATF Athlete of the Week after her Feb. 1 record-setting performance at the 2014 University of Washington Invitational in Seattle. Efraimson (Camus, Wash.), the 2013 World Youth 1500m bronze medalist, finished Saturday's 3,000m in 9:00.16, setting a new American junior record on her way to placing fourth overall among the field of collegiate runners. Her time replaces the 9:02:10 mark set by Mary Cain at the same meet in 2013. Efraimson’s performance is particularly notable since she will line up against Cain and other professional runners in the Wanamaker Mile at the 2014 Millrose Games set for Saturday, Feb. 15. Earning her second honors as USATF Athlete of the Week, Efraimson first won the distinction Dec. 11, 2013, after she won the Nike Cross Nationals Dec. 7 in Portland Meadows, Ore. Now in its 13th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week. 2014 Winners: January 15, Chris Derrick; January 22, Galen Rupp; January 29, Galen Rupp; February 5, Alexa Efraimson.
